According to Vulture's Jesse David Fox "[t]he musical will tell the story of the families of two young friends in a present-day Midwestern inner-city." So it's not necessarily about "Tupac Shakur"'s life, but his music will be a part of the story, like Abba to Mamma Mia! The show is called Holler If Ya Hear Me, and will open in the Palace Theater on Broadway this June.
Playbill reports that it will be directed by Kenny Leon and that the musical supervisor will be Daryl Waters, who also worked on Bring in the Noise and The Color Purple. Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur will also be producing.
The idea sounds good enough, but will people actually pay to see a show featuring his music when they could pay the same price to go to a concert instead? Broadway is obviously trying to attract a younger crowd, but how many people in their teens or 20s would be willing to pay? I love Broadway musicals, and I love concerts. But if I were trying to choose, it would go like this: Beyonce > Broadway. So... Holler If Ya Hear Me < Coachella Hologram?
In other Broadway news, Carly Rae Jepsen will be making her acting debut on Broadway next month when she stars in Cinderella. The pop singer Instagrammed a few pictures of her poofy ball gown, which you can see here.
My friend, Nastasia will probably find this the best news in the whole world. The summer "Call Me Maybe" first came out, she would sing that song. ALL. THE. FREAKING. TIME.
Anyway, this news makes me happy, because I don't want Jepsen to be a one-hit wonder. When do you think she found out she got the part? Before Christmas? Because if you had to fit into a ball gown/wedding dress, would you go easy on the pie or just do what the rest of the world does and go Screw it! After New Year! Or maybe I'm just trying to justify my massive pie binge over the past few weeks.
