My family keeps hoping I'll lose my accent. Ever since I moved to England, my mom keeps gushing about how awesome it would be if I came home talking more like a Brit. My grandma keeps saying the same thing, too.
Crazy people. And Madonna.
I love my family, but they overestimate me. Unlike my sister, who can imitate any accent at the drop of a hat, it takes all my focus and energy to make sure I flatten my vowels. As a girl once said to me: "How long have you been living here? Your American accent's really strong."
Although maybe it has changed.
I was born in California but moved to Switzerland when I was 13. Seven years later I watch old videos of myself and am astonished to find I sounded more like a Valley Girl. For those who don't know, this is how many girls in California speak. Here's the movie reference:
Or you could watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
I still sound American obviously, but it's just not as strong now that I'm older.
Getting back to my family's undying wish, I've posted a video of myself trying out an English accent. Can't say that I didn't try.
