The Camp Gyno

She's like Joan of Arc. For your vagina. Courtesy of HelloFlo

This is one of the best tampon commercials I've seen in a long time. You know what I love about it? That it's not all Full House about- *gasps* PERIODS!!! From the get-go, we hear a little girl casually talk about menstruation like it ain't no thang. And you know what? This is actually a cool initiation into the miserable monthly cycle also known as "Aunt Flo". Mine however, was very different.
I remember us kids being forced to watch in horror as a woman gave birth in Breaking Dawn some sex ed film. One of my former classmates is now a teenage mother, which probably speaks volumes about Sex Education in America.

The HelloFlo ad takes place at a summer camp, where this kid gets her "red badge of courage" (Do you think she'll regret saying that when she's older?). No longer a nameless loser, she generously takes it upon herself to educate the other girls about tampons, calling herself the "camp tyrant gyno".

My only complaint is the casting in this commercial. This little girl is what casting directors would call "precocious", which is code word for annoying. Unless that was the point...? If you've read my posts on Ashton Kutcher in jOBS, or Lindsay Lohan in Liz and Dick, then you'll know how much poor casting choices annoy me. Especially when the writing and concept are so good. You know who would've nailed this if she were younger? Chloe Moretz. Or Amanda Bynes before she tried to set her dog on fire.
