When I first moved to Cambridge to finish high school, a classmate turned to me and said: "You're from California, right? Is it legal to smoke weed there?"
I hated to disappoint my new friend in saying that no, it was not. Although last month Colorado and Washington state decriminalized the use of marijuana.
This increased support for the legalization of marijuana can be attributed to the increasing number of women for the cause,
thinks Allen St. Pierre, executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. "Are there parallels between women being open and honest about cannabis use at the polls on a grass-roots level and some of the most visible women in music today being open and honest about their use in the news? Absolutely."

This year's Halloween saw two divas caught in the same outfit. Well, not really. Rihanna, clad in lingerie, a veil and holding a bouquet of marijuana leaves went as the bride of Mary Jane. On the other hand, Lady Gaga tweeted a picture of herself in a green tutu with sequined weed pasties, dubbing herself Princess High, the Queen of Cannabis.

Miley Cyrus is very open about her drug use. At her 19th birthday party, Kelly Osbourne presented her with a Bob Marley cake to which she said: "You know you're a stoner when your friends make you a Bob Marley cake."
What I found the most impressive, though is a photo of Rihanna sitting on her security guard's shoulders at Coachella and rolling a doobie on his bald head. That takes skill.

When MTV's official Twitter handler captioned the headline with "Yikes", Rihanna responded with "@MTV Yikes... @rihanna ran out of f***s to give."
This unapologetic attitude among women in music toward marijuana use has perhaps boosted other's women's support for its legalization. Smoking weed is gradually becoming socially acceptable, and stonettes aren't afraid to proclaim their love for the drug.
There is a joke about why weed is still illegal in California: All the drug dealers vote against its legalization. Otherwise how would they make any money?
